What is the difference between a B flute and a C flute

What is the difference between a B flute and a C flute? I just paid heaps of money for a B flute and recently found out that the C flute is the most common flute!!! Does a B flute have different notes or something? Help!!

Hi!
The difference is that the "B flute" has a B foot joint that enables the flute to play one more note at the low end of the flute's scale.

Look at the foot joint. A flute with a B foot joint has three keys. A flute with a C foot joint has only two. See the picture here...

Both flutes play in the key of C, so you don't have to worry about your flute playing in another key.

Most flutists don't notice a difference between a flute with a C foot joint and one with a B foot joint. Most flutists don't play that low B natural very often.

For awhile, having a flute with a B foot joint was a status symbol. Now, you'll find that a lot of pros are going back to the C foot joint. It's not such a big deal anymore.

So relax. You can play just fine on the flute you have and you can play anything written for the C flute.

Can a B foot be bought for a flute that was originally bought to play C, or is that impossible
?

Hi!

I don't think so. I'm not a flute maker, but I believe that the tubing for the flute is cut differently so that a B foot couldn't be used. Maybe there is a flute maker out there that knows for sure!

Greetings,

The great French flutist, Jean Pierre Rampal, preferred the "C" foot joint. I attended three of his NJ master classes -- many years ago -- and he was playing a gold flute with a "C" foot joint.

Also, Rampal said that he'd even like one less key on the foot joint. Instead of a "B" foot joint, or "C" foot joint, he'd like a "D#" foot joint!

Here's to good flute playing!

You obviously are referring to a flute that is in the key of B(or Bb: B flat; more likely)

The C flute is a concert pitch instrument. When you play the C note, C concert pitch is what sounds, whereas on the B instrument B (concert pitch) is what sounds when you play the standard C fingering.

Thank you!!!
