What is the difference between a B flute and a C flute
What is the difference between a B flute and a C flute? I just paid heaps of money for a B flute and recently found out that the C flute is the most common flute!!! Does a B flute have different notes or something? Help!!
Hi!The difference is that the "B flute" has a B foot joint that enables the flute to play one more note at the low end of the flute's scale.
Look at the foot joint. A flute with a B foot joint has three keys. A flute with a C foot joint has only two. See the picture here...
B foot joint pictureBoth flutes play in the key of C, so you don't have to worry about your flute playing in another key.
Most flutists don't notice a difference between a flute with a C foot joint and one with a B foot joint. Most flutists don't play that low B natural very often.
For awhile, having a flute with a B foot joint was a status symbol. Now, you'll find that a lot of pros are going back to the C foot joint. It's not such a big deal anymore.
So relax. You can play just fine on the flute you have and you can play anything written for the C flute.
