What is a decent flute for a beginner?

by Mark
(Oil City, PA)

Question: Please help me with a make and model of a decent flute for a beginner. Sincerely, Mark

Answer: Armstrong makes several student flutes, 102, 104, 1042H (curved headjoint), and 103. All feature a C footjoint and closed keys. Check out the flutes here.

The Armstrong 103 is available through Woodwind Brasswind for just over $900.00 at this writing.

Gemeinhardt has made student flutes for many years. You can find one for about $500.00 at Woodwind Brasswind.

Other good brands are the Pearl Quantz Flute 505RE and the Yamaha 200 Series Open Hole Student Flute.

You can probably find a cheaper flute if you buy one used locally.

I always recommend having a good flutist play any flute you're thinking about buying first. That person can readily spot any problems.

Also remember that each flute is an "individual," so one Armstrong might be great and another might be "less than great."
