Teaching flute

by KMW
(Saskatoon)

How do you teach a student who has never seen a flute before and wants to play badly?

What do you do if he/she does not have much money?

Hi, KMW.

Start with the basics. Show the student how to open the case so that the pieces don't fall out on the floor.

Tell the student what the parts of the flute are and how they fit together. See my page about putting the flute together properly and putting it away in the case correctly.

Next, using the headjoint only, show the student how to make a sound. See my embouchure page for more details.

Then proceed to finger placement and holding the flute.

As far as the student not having a lot of money, that really has to be your call. Do you want to teach for a very small fee or none at all? If so, you can do that. Maybe you can exchange flute instruction for something the student can do for you, such as lawn mowing, computer repair, or anything else that works for the two of you.

Teach holding the flute and good finger position first.
by: Kathy

I would show your student how to hold the flute and the correct way to put the fingers on the flute keys first. Tell your student not to let the fingers go over the edges of the keys. Next show your student how to hold the flute. Keep the head up, neck straight.

Then teach the fingerings for the notes. Don't let the fingers move too far away from the keys when they change notes.

Hello!

Starting with the basics is a good idea. Then do you teach the fingering and notes together?
