Still in trouble

I am a freshman is high school and I am first flute of the second section. I try really hard, but i can't seem to get some of the pieces. My band director has picked out a few pieces for our next concert which is in march. He picked out Prelude-Variations, by Claude T. Smith. Also, another piece based on a Korean folk song titled Variations and another one, it's a march, called "Rolling Thunder." I believe it is a British or Canadian march, but I'm not sure. The music is really fast and has a lot of different time signatures like seven eights and stuff like that. if you have any advice to help me become a better flutist please e-mail me. Also, if you would happen to know, are these quality pieces of music?

Keep working

Hi, Katelyn. Yes, those are excellent pieces. I especially like the Korean Folk Song Variations. I would work on these pieces slowly at first. Use a metronome to be sure you are playing steadily. Try to isolate the most difficult spots in the music and work on those by themselves. Also, ask your band director if he has a recording of these pieces. It helps to listen to the pieces you are playing in band. If he doesn't, do a Google search for the pieces and see if there is a recording on line that you could listen to. Good luck and keep up the good work!
