He entered the employ of Frederick the Great of Prussia in 1741, and continued there for the rest of his life as a composer, flutist, and flutemaker.

This was a double-edged sword for Quantz; he had a steady job and was very well paid by the king. In fact, he was probably the highest-paid musician of his day. Yet, his compositions remained Frederick's exclusive property and none of it was published. Fortunately, his work is still being unearthed to this day.

In addition to his performing and composing duties, Quantz was also a writer and teacher.
He wrote a comprehensive treatise on flute playing, On Playing the Flute, that is still held in high regard today.
