Poulenc flute sonata
Poulenc flute sonata is one of my favorite flute sonatas. It is one of the classics of the repertoire, often programmed on recitals. Francis Jean Marcel Poulenc lived in the first half of the 20th century, 1899-1963, and was part of the French group of composers known as Les Six - The Six. The other composers included... - Milhaud
- Auric
- Durey
- Honegger
- Tailleferre
Poulenc's life typifies the Bohemian artist - his mother was an pianist, he was openly gay, and fathered a daughter with a woman he didn't marry. The flute sonata was written in Cannes, France, during the later years of his life, 1956 to 1957, and was a commission from the Coolidge Foundation at the Library of Congress. Jean-Pierre Rampal premiered the work at the Strasbourg Festival in 1957 with Poulenc accompanying on the piano. Jean-Pierre Rampal is featured on this CD playing Poulenc's sonata for flute. The sonata is neoclassical in form with three movements... - Allegretto malinconico
Whimsical, lyrical, and lilting - Cantilena: Assez lent
A lovely song - Presto giocoso
Joyous and explosive with a bright ending
This sonata is truly a joy to perform. If you haven't played it yet, put it on your list!
