Poulenc Double Trouble

by Rachel
(Vancouver, BC, Canada)

I'm currently having great difficulties double tonguing in the first movement of the Poulenc Sonata. I tried going slower, but somehow my tongue just won't listen to me. Do you any advice?

Hi, Rachel.

The Poulenc Sonata is a great piece!

I have a couple of tips to help you smooth out your double tonguing.

With double tonguing there is a strong syllable and a weak syllable...

ta-ka, ta-ka or da-ga, da-ga

... for example. The ta or da is the strong syllable because your tongue is moving forward. The ka or ga is the weak syllable because your tongue is hitting the back of your mouth.

First, practice the weak syllable all by itself...

ka-ka-ka-ka or ga-ga-ga-ga

Go slowly at first and gradually work up the speed.

Next, practice the syllables in reverse...

ka-ta, ka-ta, ka-ta, ka-ta or ga-da, ga-da, ga-da, ga-da

Again, start slowly and gradually build speed.

Do this on a consistent basis and you will see your speed improve and your weak syllable will become much stronger.

Good luck!
