Pender Island Flute Retreat

The Pender Island Flute Retreat is a 10-day retreat to explore the physical, emotional and mental aspects of flute performing and pedagogy. This year's retreat is scheduled for June 22 - July 1, 2011.

We’ve kept everything that worked so beautifully last year added more and extended the retreat to include a Teacher’s Workshop with 2 new faculty members. The price per day is the same as last year and there are some scholarships/bursaries available. There are only 13 Performer spots and 5 auditor spots available.

The retreat takes place in the beautiful oceanfront location setting of Pender Island, located between Vancouver and Vancouver Island. Location: The Timbers

Flute Course:

  • Daily masterclasses with Wibb and Lorna. Performers play twice for Wibb and once for Lorna
  • 45 minute lesson with Lorna
  • Alexander Technique lesson and Masterclass with Gabriella Minnes Brandes; Co-Director of the Vancouver School of Alexander Technique
  • Daily technique class with Lorna
  • Daily Breathing class with Gwen
  • Auditors Masterclass with Gwen
  • Auditors receive 45 minute lesson with Gwen
  • Rehearsals with Colleen Athparia, accompanist
  • Participant recital at the end of the course

Teachers' Workshop:

  • Wibb will lead Masterclasses on the flute standards that we all play and/or teach throughout our career: Mozart G Major Concerto, Bach Suite in b minor and Doppler's "Hungarian Pastoral Fantasy" as well as Moyse "24 Little Melodic Studies."
  • Lorna will facilitate discussions relevant to our own flute studios and to teaching ourselves; kinesthetic memory, constructive learning, motivation and performance psychology.
  • Heather Campbell is going to present workshops on "Teaching the Teacher" and "Healthy Emotional Boundaries."
  • Gabriella Minnes Brandes, PhD will present” The Art and Craft of skill based learning and teaching.
