Native American Flute

Native American fluteThe Native American flute is second only in popularity to the drum and have been a major part of native American music for generations.

There are a number of differences in American Indian flutes as compared to the classical silver flutes..

  • Primarily made of wood rather than metal
  • Handmade by hobbyists rather than mass produced in factories
  • Used for folk music rather than classical Western music
  • Styles vary widely, rather than the standard C flute that is used today usually don't have a metal key mechanism, simply holes to place the fingers over. There are five-hole flutes and six-hole flutes. Both allow playing all the notes of the chromatic scale.

Many different lengths of flutes are made which result in several pitched instruments: high C, mid A, G, F#, F, E, low C.

  • Prices are quite affordable in the $100 range, compared to many thousands for metal flutes.
The flutes are pitched in minor keys because native American music is usually in a minor key.

The block on the flutes is typically a carved bird or other animal. This helps guide the air stream across the flute.

The 2007 Native American Music Awards have recognized such artists as Douglas Blue Feather and Joseph Fire Crow.

The International Native American Flute Association exist to foster the preservation, appreciation, and advancement of the Native American flute.
