National Flute AssociationNational Flute Association is the largest flute organization in the world. Founded in 1973, the NFA promotes the flute and flute playing with many activities, competitions, and resources. The chief of these is the annual convention.
A number of competitions are held at the convention. Soloist competitions... Masterclass competitions... Flute choir competitions... Many masterclasses with well-known flute teachers, lectures, recitals, and concerts are available during the four days in August. There is a huge exhibitor hall with flute makers, music vendors, and accessory products of every kind. This is a great time to look at a new flute! I bought my beautiful Muramatsu flute at the 1977 convention in San Francisco. I attended the convention the following year in Washington, D.C. The highlight was hearing Jean-Pierre Rampal perform live. He was amazing. We also viewed the Dayton C. Miller collection of antique flutes. In the 1998 convention in Phoenix, I auditioned for and was accepted into the Professional Flute Choir. What a thrill that was! Also at the 1998 convention, all of the flutists were invited to play the National Anthem at the opening of an Arizona Diamondbacks baseball game in their new air-conditioned stadium. We set a world record that evening for the largest assemblage of flutists! Every convention is a thrill. Besides the convention, the flute association sponsors flute music composition and maintains a huge library of sheet music. It also publishes a quarterly magazine filled with interesting articles and flute-related information. The convention is a chance to meet people, learn a lot, and immerse yourself in all things flute. Check out the National Flute Association web site for more information.
