Judy Hand Plays the Flute Music of Keith Gates

by Judy Hand
(Lake Charles, LA)

Released by Summit Records in 2000, this is a world premiere recording of flute works by Louisiana composer Keith Gates, with the composer at the piano.

Keith Gates (1948-2007) graduated from the North Carolina School of the Arts and the Juilliard School, and served on the faculty of McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

His Sonatina for Flute and Piano was a winner in the National Flute Association's Newly Published Music Competition, and he has been a panelist and guest composer at NFA conventions.

His music is romantic in nature, and the flute music is wonderfully idiomatic.

Dr. Judy Hand is Associate Professor of Flute at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana. She has degrees from the University of Arkansas and Louisiana State University.

She has been a performer at the William Bennett International Flute Course, and has toured England and Wales with the International Flute Orchestra.

She is principal flute in the Lake Charles Symphony Orchestra and the Rapides Symphony Orchestra, and has performed at numerous NFA conventions.

Titles on the CD are:
  1. Suite Comique for Flute, Piano, and Strings (commissioned by Ransom Wilson)

  2. Sonatina for Flute and Piano

  3. Concertino for Flute and Wind Ensemble

  4. Cajun Waltz for flute and guitar
