I Got Plenty o' Nuttin sung by David Ferneau

"I Got Plenty o' Nuttin" is a song from George Gershwin's opera, Porgy and Bess. It was first performed in 1935 and portrayed African-American life in 1930s Charleston, South Carolina.

Now regarded as an American classic, Porgy and Bess was not widely accepted for another 40 years.

Perhaps the best known song from the opera is "Summertime."

In addition to showcasing the genius of Gershwin, who combines classical Western art music with jazz and folk idioms, Porgy and Bess documents the condition of African-Americans in the early 20th century.

"I Got Plenty o' Nuttin" is sung here by David Ferneau at the Urbandale High School Pops Concert in March 2008 in Urbandale, Iowa. This was the last year that the Pops Concerts were held in the old auditorium. A brand new Performing Arts Hall awaits the students this year.

David Ferneau is a freshman at the University of Kansas where he studies piano and trombone performance. His teachers are Jack Winerock and Michael Davidson.
