I want to buy a new wooden flute

by David

I'm going to buy a new flute soon (my teacher recommends it). What kind of flute should I buy? If the flute is too expensive, I can save up to buy it, I'm not rushed to buy it.

The thing I had in mind was the wooden Boehm system flute. I have no idea how to get a new, unused one. I am at an intermediate level. Where would I buy a flute?

My parents prefer it bought at a store, not online. What kind do you recommend?

Hi, David.

I'm assuming you play the wooden flute exclusively, correct? It's unusual to buy one if you play in a school band or for any other reason.

It isn't common to find a store that sells wooden flutes, but if you live near this flute maker, you might be able to visit their shop. Call or e-mail them first...

The Abell Flute Company in Asheville, North Carolina.

This company specializes in wooden Boehm flutes. Check their price list and you can see that these flutes aren't cheap! Obviously, they are very high quality, though. They are crafted from African Blackwood (grenadilla) with a sterling silver mechanism. If I were planning to buy a wooden flute, this is where I would go!

It might not be possible to go to North Carolina to get your flute, but I would still order a flute from them.

Here are some other wooden flute makers...

Sweetheart Flute Company in Enfield, Connecticut

Serenity Bamboo Flutes in Stockbridge, Massachusetts

The Irish Flute Store in Idaho

Wooden flutes have a lovely, gentle sound. They're great for playing Baroque music or in a small ensemble.

Have fun with your new flute!
