How do I blow my flute?

Question: No matter how much I try, I can't blow my flute. I don't think I'll ever be able to play it.

Answer: Sure, you'll be able to play it! It just takes the right instruction combined with some practice.

If you're having trouble forming an embouchure, please see my page on it. I give a lot of tips for developing a good embouchure.

Good luck, and don't give up!

learning to blow in the flute

Hi, please do not get discouraged. My daughter also had trouble and made no sound at all, just an air sound. After about 2 months, she was ready to quit, but then she asked me how to do it. I play the piano, no wind instrument, BUT I am a farm girl and we played the jugs. So what I did was showed my daughter how to make a sound into a jug, well a bottle really, I had no jugs. Like a 2 liter or 1 liter pop bottle empty and cleaned. I held the "jug" under her lip like a flute and we had fun playing with the angle of the jug and the size of the jug and she got it.

She then went to her flute and presto, she made a note. So be creative, have fun and try it. You never know what will help you figure out your lip shape and it is fun.

Great!

That's great, Shanique! You should definitely go out for band. You'll have a lot of fun with it.

Keep up the good work!

I tried blowing with a relaxed embouchure, and it WORKS!!! :D Thank you, I've been struggling to for a few years now, but I think I'm finally going to get it!! Thank you so much, maybe I could join Beginner's Band at school for the new school year :)
