This is a well-known, traditional French folk song about a small bird, the skylark, a small game bird. American soldiers brought the tune home with them after the first World War. The lyrics are... Alouette, gentille alouette, Alouette, je te plumerai. Je te plumerai la tête Et la tête Alouette Ah! Each time the refrain is repeated, a different part of the bird is mentioned. I'm not sure why children would want to pluck a little bird. I would find this pretty scary myself. The nature of folk songs is often difficult to understand, though. At one time when food was very difficult to come by, children might have been quite excited about the prospect of having a tasty meal of skylark.
