Flute Duets

Flute duets are fun! You and another flutist are all you need to make great music.

I've been playing duets since I was in the sixth grade. More often than not (okay, hardly ever) I didn't have another flutist friend, so after I saved up enough money to buy a cassette recorder, I started taping one line of the duet and playing along with myself on the other line.

The book I started out with way back when was the Selected Duets for Flute edited by Himie Voxman, volume 1 (the yellow book).

I love those duets and they are still a wonderful source of enjoyment for flutists today.

Don't have one of these books yourself? What are you waiting for?! Get one now. Just click the book image below...

Playing duets develops many skills that you wouldn't think about when just playing alone, including...

  • Good intonation (two flutists out of tone--the worst)
  • Rhythmic accuracy (you must take the same tempo without rushing or dragging)
And did I mention that it's fun?
