Flute comparison

A flute comparison is the key to judging which flute you will ultimately purchase. Some of the features available are...

  • B foot
  • G key - offset or inline
  • Key type - open or closed
  • Head joint material - silver plate, silver, gold,
  • Body and foot joints - silver, plated, gold
  • Gizmo key - with B-foot only
  • Decorative engraving

Also consider what you will be using the flute for...

  • A beginner instrument
  • A step up for an advanced high school player
  • For use in marching band
  • Performance major in college
  • Professional player
Remember that every flute is a little different, even if it comes from the same manufacturer.

A comparable price from one manufacturer may indicate a similar types of flutes, such as a student model versus a professional level instrument.

If you can go to the manufacturer, you have the luxury of trying many instruments. Otherwise, you can attend a trade show or flute convention where flute makers have booths set up in the exhibit hall to display their instruments. This is actually quite fun trying out many different instruments.

There are many regional flute conventions as well the annual convention of the National Flute Association. This is a great time to purchase a flute since almost every flute maker worth considering is there.

Of course, your pocket book is the ultimate guide.
