Flute case

The flute case protects your instrument from damage and provides a safe storage place when not in use.

Of course, your flute will come in a case. You won't be handed the pieces in a paper bag!

However, there are lots of options for purchasing a flute case and case covers as well.

Student flutes usually come in sturdy cases with sturdy locks.

More often than not, though, higher-end flutes come in cases with simple snap hinges.

A protective storage bag becomes a necessity.

These are usually made of heavy-duty nylon with tough plastic zippers.

Look for extra storage pockets for music, cleaning cloths, pencils, and other essential equipment.

A "gig bag" such as this one is handy and protective...

If you also play the piccolo, you can find double cases to house both instruments.

As for color and style, the sky is the limit. Fun colors are widely available. Sling the case over your shoulder or wear it like a back pack.

With so many flute case options, why pick just one? Some people love shoes, some love handbags. An entire wardrobe of flute bags is just plain fun!

I bought a Jean Cavallaro case cover right after I bought my flute. It is made of nylon with a lamb's wool lining. After 30 years of use, it barely shows any wear. It's just a simple case with a plain braid tape handle, but it has served me well.

Check out her web site--she has some beautiful covers available.

In 1977, the same year I bought my wonderful Muramatsu flute in San Francisco, Jean Cavallaro began making covers for flute cases out of her home. "Her love of the instrument, coupled with the exacting detail of her covers, led her to develop one of the premier case cover companies in the world.

Jean Cavallaro uses the best nylon zipper in the world. It will not scratch your case, it is waterproof, and it is flexible, to close smoothly around corners."

I have never had a problem with the zipper on my cover--and that's hard to believe!

Because my flute case cover doesn't have any storage whatsoever, I bought a simple canvas tote bag with a nifty flute and bird design to carry my cleaning supplies.

I have also used a notebook computer bag as a tote bag. These are the perfect size for your flute and they have lots of compartments to store accessories. They are frequently less expensive than bags specifically designed for the flute. You can even find them in stores such as Walgreen's. When they go on sale, you can pick one up for $10.

Another excellent flute case maker is Northwind Cases, Inc.
