Flute Camp

Flute camp is a great way to get intense instruction in a relaxed environment. Camps are usually in the summer, usually in June and July, but other flute institutes and workshops are held throughout the year. Students and teachers are free from their regular duties and schedules free up in the summer. If you can attend more than one camp, that's even better.

Most camps are open to flutists in grades 9 through 12, but sometimes 8th graders are eligible, too. Many camps are open to adult flutists as well.

You can make friends and meet a lot of new people, including teachers.

There is a lot of time for ensemble work and masterclasses with a variety of teachers, providing a wide variety of perspectives.

Itineraries typically offer...

  • Chamber music sessions
  • Masterclasses
  • Flute choir
  • Private flute lessons
  • Classes in specific areas of flute playing, such as vibrato
  • Performance practice classes, stage fright, how to audition for flute jobs
  • Big name flute guest artist recitals
  • Opportunity to learn a lot of repertoire for solo flute and ensembles that you normally don't have time for, as well as study in music theory and jazz

Usually camps have a great accompanist available.

Summer flute programs give the students a chance to explore college campuses for potential undergraduate attendance.

Flute manufacturers may be displaying flutes, which is a great opportunity to try new instruments.

Depending on the camp, you can simply register, pay your money, and you're in.

For others, though, you must make an audition CD and wait for your admission status.

Most camps last a week. There is usually a resident option and a commuter option. Prices vary widely, but expect to pay at least $300 to $400 for tuition and at least that much more for room and board. Incidental expenses will bump your total cost up to about $1,000.

Of course, it's a camp, so expect to have some fun in non-flute areas, such as going to a movie or swimming.

Check my blog for postings of flute symposiums and camps. Find other camps on-line or call the college you are interested in to see if they have a flute camp.

It's great fun!
