Flute and singing

The flute and singing go hand in hand. Learning to sing well helps your flute playing immensely.

When you study singing, you can concentrate solely on the airstream and breathing process without worrying about holding the flute, embouchure, body stance, finger position, etc.

Once you have developed a full voice, it translates very well to your flute playing.

Many flute techniques, including the open throat and deep breathing, can be learned much more easily through vocal study.

An extended technique for the flute is to sing while producing a flute tone at the same time, and many contemporary works employ this style of playing the flute. Playing while singing is also a great practice tool because so much air is required to produce a vocal sound with a flute tone at the same time.

From a financial point of view, the flutist who sings well can teach both flute and voice lessons. You may even be able to give both lessons to the same students.
