Fingering on the flute

Question: Hello, I'm George. I began learning my flute about a year ago, but I just tried that on my own with the help of some beginners videos on the Youtube or somethings of that sort. I follow the concept that keeping one key after the other from the side away from mouth raises the tone by a half, but after that I recognized that my fingering differs from a lot players I saw on videos! Though I can do the music just like what I hear from them as an example keeping the key pressed by the right pinky always opened in many notes that doesn't affect the sound of the tone of the note if keeping it opened or not. So am i playing wrong or playing flute may depends on fingering differs from one person to another? May I play wrong because of the fingering though I can do a music well with a correct tone sound. Thanks a lot.

Answer: Yes, you're right. The right pinky often doesn't change the sound. Certain notes will frequently sound the same even if the right pinky is up. The right pinky can help you maintain balance of the flute when holding it, though.

I suggest getting a good fingering chart and becoming familiar with them. It's good to have a working knowledge of what the fingerings should actually be.
