Question: I am a beginner flute player. After 4 weeks of lessons, I am still struggling with the correct way to hold the flute. I especially have problems when trying to play a C. Should I be resting the flute in the curve of my index finger? Should I be rolling the flute away from me to balance it? My teacher says he has never had a student ask these questions. Any suggestions for a beginner adult? Thanks

Answer:
Actually, this is quite a common beginner's problem, no matter what age you are.

It can be tricky to hold the flute properly because of the "balancing act" involved.

The "C" can be the toughest note to play because it has the fewest number of fingers pressed down.

The flute should be held against the chin (no rolling out or in needed), at the base of the left index finger, on top of the right thumb, and with the right little finger pressed down.

With a little practice, you'll have it down in no time. Good luck and keep practicing!
