Chinese bamboo flute

The Musician is Playing a Chinese Flute at the Temple of Eternal

Chinese bamboo flute is called a Dizi in China. This very simple instrument is prized in China for its light weight, low price, and ease in learning how to play.

The simple construction consists of...

  • 1 blowhole
  • 1 membrane hole
  • 6 finger holes
  • 2 pairs of holes at the end to correct the pitch and decorative tassels

They are tuned to a diatonic major scale. The tone hole is covered with a rice paper membrane which gives a buzzing sound.

Some of these ancient instruments date back 9,000 years. They were often used to accompany Chinese opera performances.

These simple instruments can be very ornate works of art. Some even have calligraphic poems carved in them.

The price is reasonable as well, about $70 for a high-end Maestro Dizi Bamboo Flute. These can be ordered directly from China.
