Bass flute
The bass flute is the second-largest and lowest-pitched member of the family, first being manufactured in the 1920s.
It's an expensive addition, too, so most of these flutes are found on college campuses or as a part of a large (and well-funded) flute choir. Jazz musicians like this instruments and it works well for movie scores since it can be miked. A very relaxed embouchure and lots of air are necessary to get a sound on the bass. It's quite unwieldy and can be difficult to hold. More than one configuration of the bass flute is available, including an upright model with a curved head joint where the player can sit and rest the flute on the floor. The Kingma is widely recognized as the top brand. Although the repertoire is limited more composers are writing music for this instrument...
The head joint on this flute is curved so that the player's arms can reach all of the keys. This little girl should probably stick with the piccolo for awhile! Photo courtesy of addisonrd
