Bamboo flute

Nontraditional flute, such as the bamboo flute, are frequently found in ancient cultures, employed in ceremonies and worship. Today they are made and played for fun.

Obviously, you won't find a flute made of bamboo or PVC pipe in a symphony orchestra, but you can have a lot of fun making and playing one of them.

Bamboo instruments are traditionally associated with primitive or folk cultures, particularly Japanese, Chinese, and southeast Asian, and are frequently a part of the culture's worship music.

Other non-metal materials are used for flute making, even glass, but these are typically novelties or works of art.

You could even make your own flute from bamboo. Why bother making such an instrument? It's fun and can be quite educational as well. Your flutist friends would love them as gifts, too. The wood is easy to obtain and inexpensive. Concerned about the environment? This fast-growing wood replenishes itself extremely fast.
