The incredible story of this great Christian song is that lyricist, John Newton, actually worked in the slave trade at one point in his life. His ultimate conversion led him to pen these soulful words.
The music isn't attributed to any composer, but is described as a Scottish or Irish pentatonic bagpipe tune. We're used to hearing it played on bagpipes (remember Mr. Spock's funeral?), but it's great on any instrument or sung even without accompaniment.
Just about anyone can play this, even beginners; you just have to feel the emotion.
