ABRSM Grade 7 Flute Scales

by Enya
(Belfast, Northern Ireland)

Hiya.

My name is Enya. I'm 16 years old and I have been playing the flute for 4 years. I am currently doing my Grade 7, working towards doing my exam in June. I've practiced my scales so much and I still can't get a grasp of them. Do you have any techniques to learning/playing scales at grade 7 standard? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Enya :D

Hi, Georgia.

1) Practice your scales slowly and gradually get faster. I like to practice with a metronome. Start at a speed that you can play the scale perfectly and move the metronome faster gradually.

2) Practice the scales with different rhythms. For example, instead of straight eighth notes, play with a dotted eighth/sixteenth rhythm. Then reverse it to a sixteenth/dotted eighth. Then play the rhythm in straight eighth notes again.
