RULES AND REGULATIONS
The Chicago Flute Club Walfrid Kujala Piccolo Artist Competition is open to all piccolo players age 18 years or older, from any geographical area.
The application fee is $40 and is non-refundable.
All application materials must be postmarked by Monday, April 6, 2009.
No high school students will be permitted to enter.
Current students of the final round judges will not be permitted to participate.
The first place winner will be awarded $1,500.
The second place winner will be awarded $750.
The third place winner will be awarded $500.
The preliminary round recordings will not be returned.
Four finalists and one alternate will be notified by May 6, 2009.
The four finalists will perform in-person with an accompanist for the final round.
Finalists must provide their own accompanist. The Chicago Flute Club can provide you with contact information for a local accompanist if necessary.
Finalists are responsible for their own travel arrangements.
The final round is open to the public and will be video recorded by Burkart Flutes & Piccolos for promotional purposes only.
All judges’ decisions are final.
REPERTOIRE
Preliminary Round
1. Katherine Hoover, Three Sketches for piccolo and piano with accompaniment (available at
www.fluteworld.com)
2. Two contrasting pieces of contestant’s choice (these may be single movements of larger works). Please record with accompaniment if it is written.
3. Applicant must provide a list of repertoire they would be prepared to play in the final round.
4. Applicants must submit two unedited recordings of the preliminary round selections on CD in the given order. No identifying information should appear on the CD face or packaging, but a complete track list must be included. Recordings will be coded and reviewed by a judging committee.
Final Round
Final round applicants will play for a maximum total time of 20 minutes each (including time
between movements). Final round repertoire must be submitted at the time of the application and
applicants will be bound by these selections. The final round music may include music performed
for the preliminary round.
